Preserving History: The Future of Stathern War Memorial Institute Village Hall, Leicester

Nestled in the picturesque village of Stathern, the War Memorial Institute Village Hall is a cherished part of our community's heritage. As a central hub for local activities, it's essential to maintain its charm while updating it to meet modern needs. Recently, we conducted a comprehensive building survey and feasibility assessment to evaluate the hall's current condition and explore its future potential.

The Importance of Building Surveys

Building surveys are crucial for historic buildings like the Stathern War Memorial Institute Village Hall. They provide detailed insights into the building's structural and functional aspects, highlighting areas that need maintenance or upgrades. This ensures our community space remains safe, functional, and compliant with current regulations.

Key Findings and Recommendations

Our survey revealed that the building's brickwork is structurally sound, with no major issues. However, we did find a slight crack above a window on the entrance porch. While not an immediate risk, we recommend filling this crack to prevent future problems. If the crack widens, we might need to replace the lintel.

One important finding was the use of cement-based mortar in the brickwork. For historic buildings, lime mortar is preferred as it allows the building to breathe, preventing dampness and condensation. Cement mortar, being non-porous, can cause internal dampness. To preserve the hall’s integrity, we recommend replacing with lime mortar. This will help prevent damage and reduce repair costs.

We also noted that the right flank wall has brick buttress supports and steel ties to reinforce the structure due to past movement. While there are no signs of ongoing issues, these supports lack proper moisture barriers, leading to dampness and vegetation growth. This wall will be demolished and reconstructed to ensure long-term stability.

Enhancing and Expanding the Hall's Usage

With the survey complete, our feasibility assessment focused on how to enhance and expand the hall's usage. We aim to renovate the hall with modern amenities while preserving its historical charm. Planned upgrades include modernisng the kitchen and restrooms, installing energy-efficient lighting and heating, and ensuring accessibility with ramps and handrails.

Engaging with the local community revealed a strong desire for a versatile space that can host a variety of events, from social gatherings to educational workshops. By creating flexible seating arrangements and multi-purpose rooms, we can meet these needs. Additionally, implementing eco-friendly practices like solar panels and rainwater harvesting can reduce operational costs and support sustainability.

Moving Forward

Our building survey and feasibility assessment have provided valuable insights into the Stathern War Memorial Institute Village Hall’s condition and potential. The next steps involve prioritising repairs and upgrades, seeking funding opportunities, and involving stakeholders in developing a comprehensive renovation plan.

Maintaining and enhancing this historic hall ensures it continues to serve as a vital community hub, honoring its past while embracing the future. By investing in its preservation and modernisation, the Stathern War Memorial Institute Village Hall will remain a cherished asset for generations to come.
